According to the Sun, Chelsea are set to ramp up their efforts to land Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell.
The Blues have turned their attention to the Foxes star after missing out on Alex Telles to Paris Saint-Germain.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is keen to bring in a left-back. He has been unimpressed by Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri and has taken to playing Cesar Azpilicueta there, out of position.
Lampard was keen on signing Telles who was significantly cheaper than Chilwell. However, according to Brazilian outlet Gauchazh (h/t Sun) that plan has suffered a huge blow. According to the report, French giants PSG have moved ahead of us in the race for the Porto star.
Chilwell is an accomplished player who has built his reputation in the Premier League. He will, however, not come cheap, with Chelsea having to fork out around three times the fee they would have had to pay for Telles.
His performances for the Foxes have also seen him grab the attention Manchester City. England boss Gareth Southgate too has made the 23-year-old his top choice at left-back.
Chilwell came through the Leicester academy before going on to establish himself as the club’s first-choice left-back.
He has made 118 appearances for Leicester and has supplemented them by scoring three goals and 12 assists. A solid defender, he is also a fair hand at going forward.
He will cost us at least £50million, a huge outlay, given the financial crisis owing to the shutdown. Alonso has impressed of late since the winter break and surely deserves another run out in the team if we cannot afford Chilwell.
Chilwell is undoubtedly a talented player who will add more to our team. At 23, he is among the best in his position in the Premier League. Whether we sign him or not remains to be seen.
