Oliver Giroud keen to extend stay at Chelsea beyond summer

According to Italian publication Calciomercato (h/t Daily Star), Oliver Giroud’s agent has claimed that his client could remain at the club next season.

“He could decide to stay at Chelsea for another year”

The 33-year-old is in the final few months of his contract at the Bridge. He joined the club in January 2018. He has since made 76 appearances and has scored 21 goals and 13 assists.

He has largely been on the sidelines following the appointment of Frank Lampard as manager. Given his limited opportunities he was keen on leaving the club last January. He was consistently linked to both Inter Milan and Tottenham Hotspur.

Olivier Giroud was close to leaving Chelsea in January

Giroud has made just 13 appearances this season, six of them came in the club’s last six matches after the injury sustained by Tammy Abraham. (h/t Transfermarkt)

The player’s agent, Vincenzo Morabito has accepted that the player could now choose to remain at Chelsea. He admitted that the situation right now is unclear and will gain clarity by April or May.

The Frenchman is not the only player who will be a free agent in the summer. Three other Chelsea veterans Willian, Willy Caballero and Pedro, are all set to see their contract expire by June. (h/t Football.london)

At 33, Giroud is unlikely to be a starter at a top club. He has shown enough guile and skill to prove himself as a capable backup.

Tammy Abraham can benefit from being mentored by Oliver Giroud

With the coronavirus pandemic set to affect the financial strength of clubs, it remains to be seen how we will behave in the next transfer market.

The likes of Tammy Abraham have skill but are still young. Having a seasoned professional like Giroud who has played in some of the biggest games in world football as a mentor will only help boost the youngster’s maturity.
