Loan Watch – Chelsea’s 18-Year-Old Striker Is On Fire For His Championship Side

Chelsea have been winners of the FA Youth Cup for the past three seasons. Owner Roman Abramovich’s intense desire to promote from within has seen Chelsea go after some of the best young players even before they turn into professionals. As a result, the Chelsea youth squad has always been brimming with talent. Many youngsters, though, are sent out on loan in order to acquire experience and most of them never make it to the Chelsea first-team.

The case of Tammy Abraham, an 18-year-old striker, could be different, as he has already caught the attention of the Championship and the Premier League with his goal scoring exploits. On loan at Bristol City, Abraham has become the first player to score 10 goals in the Championship and it is quite a feat in the league containing the likes of Newcastle United, Aston Villa, and Norwich City. For those who have followed Abraham in the last few years will not be surprised by his scoring ability, but to be able to do well in the Championship deserves recognition.

Abraham has always been a goal scorer throughout his youth days. His goals were a major factor in Chelsea winning back-to-back FA Youth Cup.

As one of the play-off hopefuls, Bristol City were expected to offer some first-team opportunities and this led to the season-long loan move in the summer. After scoring his first goal in the EFL Cup game against Wycombe Wanderers, Abraham has pretty much been unstoppable. His goal against Fulham during the weekend meant that he has failed to score in only one of the last seven games. His impact in the Championship has been similar to what players like Marcus Rashford have had in recent years – albeit at a much higher level.

It is clear that Abraham possesses an eye for goal. The player has already been compared to former Arsenal forward Ian Wright due to his ability to score out of nothing. Great strikers often find a way to score even when the odds are stacked against them and Jamie Vardy is a fine example of it.

For all the praise he has been receiving, Abraham is not without his faults. Even though he has scored 11 goals already, none of his goals have come against teams in the top six of the Championship. His goals have largely been against struggling teams like Rotherham United and lower league opposition in the EFL Cup.

Still, goals are goals and Abraham will start to get even more notice if he continues on this vein of form.
