1) options
Chelsea currently have one of the strongest midfields in the country for me so to splash out on another seems odd. Unless they are planning to get rid of another body, that is. With Brazilian midfielder Ramires currently the first choice in the middle with either Frank Lampard or John Obi Mikel, I’m not sure where Matic is going to fit in.
The Blues also have Michael Essien in that role, as well as a host of more attacking central players. Strength in depth is one thing, but players tend to grow frustrated if they’re not playing.
2) price
According to the reports, Chelsea spent £22m on the Serbian. That’s a lot of money, especially when you let the same player go to Benfica a few years prior for just a fraction of that in an exchange deal for David Luiz.
Not only does it make them look silly, but it also adds a lot of expectancy onto his shoulders as the Chelsea fans are expecting him to have improved drastically.
3) what does he offer?
I’m not sure that he offers anything that they don’t currently have. Yes he’s a bit taller than the other options, but he can’t match the strength of Essien, the energy of Ramires nor the aggressiveness of Mikel.
It seems a bit of a weird one, to me.
