New Chelsea signing Juan Mata announced that he had rejected Arsenal and Tottenham, so that he could join Andre Villas-Boas’ project and to win trophies.
The Spanish midfielder said: “I want to come to England to win trophies, and that’s why I accepted Chelsea’s offer.”
Before adding: “It was also a question of sporting achievement, not money. Arsenal and Tottenham were both interested in me but they did not compare with the Blues.”
Last season Mata, 23, scored eight goals which helped Valencia finish third La Liga, which was a bit of surprise after losing top scorer David Villa to Barcelona.
He captained the Spanish Under-21s at the European Championships during the summer, and was part of Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning squad.
