Chelsea star Cole Palmer feels his side gets too comfortable in matches which leads to defeats

Chelsea star Cole Palmer emerged as the game’s hero once again, netting two goals in a 2-2 draw with Burnley. Despite his efforts, Palmer was left frustrated as Chelsea failed to secure a victory against 10-man Burnley.

Palmer pointed out Chelsea’s recurring issue after drawing matches, noting a pattern of becoming too comfortable after taking the lead. This trend has persisted week after week, with Chelsea consistently conceding goals despite scoring first. The FA Cup quarterfinal against Leicester City served as a warning sign of their defensive vulnerability, and this was evident once more in the clash with Burnley, highlighting the Blues’ ongoing struggles to contain opposing attackers.

Chelsea gained a numerical advantage over Burnley when Lorenz Assingnon was sent off in the 40th minute. Despite Palmer giving Chelsea the lead four minutes later, the team quickly conceded a goal in the second half. Palmer once again put Chelsea ahead with a remarkable finish, only for Burnley to rally back and equalize through Dara O’Shea.

Palmer has undoubtedly been the standout signing of the season for us. Amidst the confusion and subpar performances of the team, he has been the only consistent player. However, there are instances when even his brilliance cannot single-handedly influence the outcome of the match, especially if the entire team fails to perform collectively.

. Following the match, the former Manchester City player expressed his dismay by saying, via Fabrizio Romano on X:

“It’s poor, really… It can’t happen. Especially when they go down to ten men. We got too comfortable. Same story: we kill ourselves every week. It’s got to improve for us as players. We need consistency.”.

Even Palmer is frustrated

Cole Palmer feels his teammates become too comfortable in games which affects the game.

They are spot on because Palmer’s statements have highlighted a recurring theme in every game. Our inability to forestall the opposition’s attack stems from the inconsistency in our defense throughout the match, allowing them to easily overwhelm us. If we don’t address this issue, it will persist throughout the season. Drawing with a 10-man Burnley team that is struggling and headed for relegation is quite embarrassing; we should have secured a victory by a wide margin.

If this persists, we won’t be able to climb above the 11th position, and the fans will continue to put pressure on us. Consistency is crucial to maintaining our form in every game, but we struggle due to the youthfulness of our squad, and our flaws are consistently exposed by more experienced sides. Improvement is imperative; otherwise, we’ll continue to face the same challenges until the end of the season.
