Shay Given brings up Thomas Tuchel example in urging Chelsea to remain patient with Mauricio Pochettino

It’s evident that Chelsea’s recent struggles under Mauricio Pochettino have raised questions about the Argentine manager’s future at the club. However, former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton believes that patience is key, urging the club to remain steadfast in their support of Pochettino despite their disappointing performances this season.

The recent 4-2 defeat to Wolves at Stamford Bridge, coupled with a 4-1 loss at the hands of Liverpool, has left Chelsea languishing in 11th place in the Premier League standings, a position that does not reflect the club’s lofty ambitions. Despite significant investments in the squad, including a substantial outlay on players last summer, the desired results have been elusive for Chelsea under Pochettino’s stewardship.

Sutton draws parallels to Pochettino‘s tenure at Tottenham Hotspur, where the Argentine manager faced challenges before eventually achieving success with a young and talented squad. He highlights the importance of patience, highlighting the need for Chelsea to trust Pochettino’s managerial abilities and allow him time to implement his vision for the team. Here is what he said via BBC:

“It is easy to say you need to change manager,”

“If you look at the job Pochettino did at Tottenham, eventually he got there.”

“Certainly there needs to be patience with the manager.”

Patience is key with a young squad. We need to trust Mauricio Pochettino.

Russian Roulette after the Abramovic Era!

The recent history of managerial changes at Chelsea, with Thomas Tuchel being sacked just months after the takeover by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, serves as a cautionary tale. Despite Tuchel’s previous success, his tenure was short-lived, underscoring the instability that can result from frequent managerial changes.

Former Newcastle United goal-keeper Shay Given echoes Sutton’s sentiments, highlighting the ineffectiveness of constantly changing managers without allowing sufficient time for them to implement their strategies and build a cohesive team. He points to Tuchel’s stature as one of the best managers in world football, underscoring the unpredictability and impatience that have characterized managerial changes at Chelsea in recent times. Here is what Given had to add to Sutton’s comments via BBC:

“You can’t just keep sacking the manager,”

“Tuchel was regarded as one of the best managers in world football.”

“There has to be something else going on behind the scenes because you have had some good managers in there.”

Given the substantial financial investments made by Chelsea’s ownership in acquiring young talents signed on long-term contracts, there is a sense of expectation for the team to perform at a higher level. However, Sutton acknowledges that the transition and improvement process may take time, especially considering the young age and relative inexperience of many of Chelsea’s players.

Too many managers too quickly.

Calls for patience and stability at Chelsea amidst their current struggles reflect a broader understanding of the challenges facing the club. Chelsea can navigate through this period of uncertainty and emerge stronger in the long run. Given the complexities of modern football management, such an approach may indeed be the key to unlocking Chelsea’s potential and returning the club to its former glory.
