When asked what position Mauricio Pochettino prefers to play Cole Palmer on the field, the Argentine manager responded sarcastically and said on the pitch.
The former Manchester City star has been brilliant for the Blues since he was signed and is currently the Blues top scorer with nine goals in the Premier League, though sometimes his wastefulness is frustrating, and it was once again on display against Aston Villa.
The 21-year-old spurned many chances in Chelsea’s 0-0 draw with Aston Villa, and now both sides will once again meet at Villa Park. However, the Blues should have certainly scored goals had the players not missed some glorious opportunities.
This has raised some questions about whether Palmer is more effective as a striker, on the wings or as a central attacking midfielder. And when asked by the Argentine manager which position is his best, (h/t Evening Standard), the 51-year-old said:
“I prefer him on the pitch at the moment!”
This is the best replay you can give because Palmer is versatile and he can operate as a midfielder, striker and winger. But in games, he seems most creative when he functions behind the striker, which is his best position because it allows him to be creative and create chances.
He may be under pressure, but thus far as a striker, he appears to have been less decisive than he is as a playmaker. Since we haven’t been particularly effective in front of goal, it will take a lot of time to mould into a player who can lead the team and score goals regularly.
Despite his youth, Palmer has maturity in his playing. He is a valuable addition to us and, with the manager’s excellent guidance and backing, has all the makings of an envisioned Chelsea star.
