‘It would take more than a world record bid’ for Liverpool to have a shot at signing Chelsea star – Report

Liverpool would need to break the bank if they wish to sign Chelsea defender Levi Colwill

According to a report by Football. London, it would take ‘more than a world record bid’ for Liverpool to have a shot at signing Chelsea superstar defender Levi Colwill. Just to be clear, they are talking about a world-record bid for a defender.

If that is the case, we are definitely talking nine figures here. That’ll mean a huge sale for us, for an academy player. Sounds enticing, doesn’t it? Well, here is our plea to the decision-makers at our club – even if it is ten figures, please do not consider it!

Colwill might not exactly be covering himself in glory like some would have expected him to this season. The young English defender has had to face the harsh realities of playing in a cut-throat league and some of his performances have not really caught the eye.

However, perspective is very important here. Colwill is a centre-back by trade and that’s where he has made a name for himself. Mauricio Pochettino this season has played the 20-year-old 16 times as a left-back and 10 times in his natural position as a centre-back (Transfermarkt).

What we can do is not judge a player’s ability when he is forced to play out of position for the sake of the team. Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell have been injured for much of the first half of the season. When such factors are taken into account, maybe we can cut Colwill some slack.

Loyalty is a two-way street!

If Levi Colwill was to leave/ to be sold, he wouldn’t be the first academy prospect walking out of the door at Stamford Bridge. However, Chelsea need to take a page out of Barcelona’s books here and realise that they must put a premium on academy graduates.

It is very rare to see the Spanish giants ever parting ways with one of their academy stars. We have been notorious in this regard though. We are the kind of club who have sold an inform, promising Tammy Abraham to sign Romelu Lukaku, only to let him on loan after loan just one year later.

We saw Mason Mount walk out of the door in the summer. If speculations are to be believed, Conor Gallagher could be the next one on his way out. He might hold Armando Broja’s hands whilst doing so.

Chelsea need to stop doing this. Liverpool can give us 12 figures for all they care, we mustn’t be entertaining offers for Levi Colwill. Let’s wait and see if he can prove himself in a Blues jersey soon and put an end to these exit links.
