Ligue 1 outfit OGC Nice are ‘waiting’ for an offer from Chelsea for Kasper Schmeichel in the ongoing transfer window, according to a report via football.london.
The French side expect the Blues to make an approach to acquire the services of the Denmark international this summer. As things stand, the Stamford Bridge side have their eyes on the 36-year-old as a backup goalkeeper.
Before moving to Les Aiglons last summer, the shot-stopper spent several years playing for Leicester City. Now, he is keen on returning to England in the coming weeks.
Schmeichel made his way through the youth ranks at Manchester City and played for Notts County and Leeds United before signing for the Foxes in the summer of 2011.
Subsequently, the shot-stopper spent several years in the Championship before being promoted to the Premier League with the King Power Stadium side. To everyone’s surprise, under Claudio Ranieri, the East Midlands-based club did the unthinkable and won the league title in the 2015/16 term.
Schmeichel continued to perform admirably at Leicester. The Danish national added an FA Cup to his name before leaving for Nice.
At Chelsea, we first lost Edouard Mendy this summer, who left for Saudi Arabia. Recently, Kepa Arrizabalaga has also parted ways with the club and joined Real Madrid on loan.
As a result, the goalkeepers who regularly played for us over the last few years are no longer with us. The Blues did sign Robert Sanchez from Brighton & Hove Albion. But the Stamford Bridge side only have Marcus Bettinelli as the only other established shot-stopper in their ranks.
Therefore, we evidently need to add more quality and depth in between the sticks. Whether Schmeichel’s experience will entice Chelsea to get him remains to be seen.
