“Serious signing”- Pundit thinks Chelsea have a better midfield duo than even Manchester City

Michael Owen feels Chelsea’s acquisition of Moises Caicedo will make them the best midfield duo in Premier League

Michael Owen has compared Manchester City midfielders duo Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne to Chelsea youngsters Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.

Chelsea’s recent signing of the Ecuadorian midfielder will see the 21-year-old team up with Fernandez, which Owen feels is one of the best midfield partnerships and comes close to Rodri and De Bruyne in terms of quality.

The Blues beat Liverpool to land the former Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder after months of negotiations with the club, which saw Chelsea once again break the British transfer record and pay £115 million.

The west Londoners have reached an agreement with Southampton to sign Romeo Lavia, who is set to undergo medicals this week as a Chelsea player.

The Blues will play their next game against West Ham United on August 20, and the fans will expect to see the dream midfield duo of Fernandez and Caicedo start from the get-go. Speaking on the same topic, the Liverpool legend feels Chelsea have the best midfield pairings, and he told Premier League productions:

“Adding Caicedo to that Chelsea midfield will be almost formidable. With him and Enzo Fernandez in midfield, I can’t think of a better midfield combination in the Premier League. You look at Rodri and [Kevin] De Bruyne. But that is one serious signing for Chelsea.”

Comparing Fernandez and Caicedo, to Rodri and De Bruyne may seem unfair right now because the Manchester City midfielders are significantly superior in terms of experience and have helped their team win the Champions League after playing with each other for years.

They are two of the best midfielders in the world and have the ability to influence the trajectory of a match with their understanding of the game. But the former Liverpool striker’s words make sense when we talk about the balance and the ceilings of the players.

Caicedo is a defensive midfielder who specialises in the dirty side of things in the middle of the park. Fernandez is more creative and is a playmaker who likes to play a little bit ahead of the No. 6 position to directly influence the game. Together, they could run our midfield for the next decade. Right now, hardly anyone comes close to this combination.
