Chelsea keeping tabs on Barcelona midfield prodigy

Chelsea are monitoring Barcelona youngster situation Gavi this summer

According to a Spanish outlet, Sport Chelsea are keeping tabs on Barcelona midfielder Gavi who could see less game-time this season after the La Liga club landed Ilaky Gundogan.

The report claims that the youngster could see less game time under Xavi as the Spanish club is currently stacked with midfielders such as Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Gündogan, and Oriol Romeo. However, the Spanish international wants to remain at the club regardless of potentially enjoying fewer minutes on the pitch.

Gavi’s talent saw him become a cornerstone of the club’s midfielder after his promotion to Barcelona’s famous academy La Masia. At just 19 years of age, the midfielder has already made over 97 appearances for the Catalans giants. It is admittedly a surprise that a player of his calibre and potential is backed to potentially exit the Nou Camp.

Chelsea were also earlier linked with the midfielder after Barcelona faced issues registering him in the first team due to financial problems. The West Londoners pushed for a move, which saw the club representative meet the Gavi family over a potential move to Stamford Bridge.

However, the move never came to fruition, as the midfielder finally confirmed he wants to remain at Barcelona despite interest from top European clubs. Now the West Londoners going for Gavi wouldn’t seem like a priority as they have plenty of midfielders at their disposal. The likes of Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, Carney, Andrey Santos and Cesare Casadei are all at the club with Romeo Lavia also likely to be added to the list.

However, given that he is only 19 and has already established himself as a household-name midfielder for a great club like Barcelona, he will fit the Blues’ objective of prioritising the purchase of young players.

The Catalan giants are very unlikely to want to trade their most valuable asset because they consider Gavi to be an essential member of the team. Gundogan is a short term fix at bets, meaning Gavi should enjoy significant playing time in the coming years.

Gavi would be a sensational addition but another midfield addition is not our priority at the moment. The Blues need an infallible goal scorer who can help find the back of the net on a regular basis.
