As per Daily Mail (h/t Football London), Aston Villa are set to give Chelsea some competition for signing Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams this summer.
The USA international has a release clause in his contract that got activated after Leeds got relegated at the end of last season. That might make it easier for the buying clubs to make a move to sign him.
We know Chelsea are keen to bolster their central midfield department ahead of the start of the new season. Moises Caicedo has been a top target all summer long, but it has become quite tetchy for them to complete a deal for the Ecuadorian with Brighton.
The Seagulls recently rejected an £80m bid from the Blues for the 21-year-old. They want more than £100m, in keeping with what Arsenal paid to get Declan Rice.
Evening Standard has earlier reported that Chelsea are keeping an eye on PSG midfielder Leandro Paredes as a Caicedo alternative. We can assume that Adams falls into that category as well.
Almost 12 months ago, Leeds signed the American international from RB Leipzig for a fee in the region of £20m. Despite the Yorkshire-based club’s relegation, the 24-year-old had a decent first season in the Premier League. Moreover, he had a good World Cup in Qatar.
Adams is a defensive midfielder who can operate as a wide midfielder and a right-back if need be. He is a highly intense player on and off the ball who likes to stay on the front foot and do things at a rapid pace.
He has the hallmark of being a great Mauricio Pochettino midfielder. It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will persist with the Caicedo deal or seriously pursue a chance to get Adams before Aston Villa does.
