Andriy Shevchenko has backed Mykhaylo Mudryk to make an impression in the upcoming season as Chelsea prepare to face Liverpool in their opening game on August 13 at Stamford Bridge.
Mudryk’s breakthrough at Shakhtar Donetsk saw top European clubs line up for his signing, with Arsenal leading the race, but Chelsea hijacked their deal at the last moment and signed him for £89 million.
However, his first season at Chelsea did not go as he expected, as Mudryk played fewer games and made only 15 appearances but did show flashes of his talent.
During pre-season, the 22-year-old was brimming with confidence as he showed the club his true attributes, and he will be hoping to make a massive impact.
He also has the support of former Chelsea star Shevchenko, who claimed he is looking forward to seeing him reach his potential, (h/t Daily Mail) as he told TalkSPORT ahead of Game4Ukraine.
‘’I’m very excited, especially because the Ukrainian player, Mudryk, is there. I’ve been looking at a couple of friendly games Chelsea have been playing in America, and I think he’s getting there. His team is starting to play very good football. It’s going to be an exciting season for Chelsea.’’
Mudryk is a young man of 22, but he has a lot of potential; therefore, we should be patient with him. Mauricio Pochettino is the ideal manager who will undoubtedly help the Ukrainian attacker reach his potential.
He is likely to have a profound impact at Chelsea. He showed throughout the preseason that he has what it takes to turn the game on its head by himself. He lacked the finishing touch, managing no goals in his first 17 appearances for the club.
But he should now have enough confidence in his ability to showcase his best self in the Premier League after a great pre-season and UEFA Euro U21 championship with Ukraine. Shevchenko himself struggled here at Chelsea when he was signed in 2006.
So it shows even the best of the best can have it tough in England. But with more stability in the team due to the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino and the sale of expendable players, Mudryk should have the positive environment he needs to succeed.
