As per Italian outlet TuttoNapoli (h/t Football.London), Victor Osimhen could sign a new deal with Napoli despite interest from Premier League clubs Chelsea and Manchester United.
Chelsea are in the race to sign the Nigerian international to bolster their centre-forward department. They would face competition from United for doing so. A bid of around £100m might be enough to get this deal.
But, seeing the latest updates that Osimhen could sign a new deal with Napoli, it hampers the Blues’ chances of even trying to get him this summer. The situation is still in limbo though. We may get a clearer picture in the coming weeks if not days.
We know Chelsea have signed a striker Nicolas Jackson a few days ago. But, the Senegal international is a young striker who had one senior season at Villarreal before arriving at Stamford Bridge. Banking on him to take the number nine role and do all the scoring might be naive thinking.
So, there is an understanding of why they are keeping tabs on Osimhen. The Nigerian had an exceptional season last time around with Napoli. His goals were one of the key reasons why they lifted the Scudetto in May after many years.
The former Lille marksman is someone who can run the channels, play with back to goal, link the play up, make runs in behind, score goals from all angles and is a physically strong specimen.
He could fit in perfectly with how Mauricio Pochettino wants to play – with a proper number nine up front. He had that with Harry Kane at Tottenham Hotspur and it worked perfectly.
Let’s hope that the chances of signing Osimhen haven’t died yet. The other question would be whether United can offer a deal before Chelsea for him.
