Liverpool make an inquiry into signing Chelsea centre back Levi Colwill this summer

Liverpool have made an inquiry into securing the services of Chelsea defender Levi Colwill in the ongoing summer transfer window.

As per Football London, (h/t Mirror) Jurgen Klopp was impressed by Colwill’s performance against Liverpool when he was on loan to Brighton & Hove Albion. The German is keen to add the youngster to his roster as the Reds rebuild their ageing side.

Klopp is hoping to rebuild his team after a poor season where they failed to qualify for the Champions League next season. The Reds have so far signed Alexis MacAllister and Dominik Szoboszlai. Adding a defender of Colwill’s ability will future proof their backline as Virgil van Dijk continues to grow old.

Now that the German manager is looking to beef up his defence, given that Joel Matip’s future remains in doubt, Colwill has been seen as an excellent replacement for Matip.

It may seem challenging to sign the 20-year-old, given that Mauricio Pochettino is keen on working with the centre-back and has plans for him in the upcoming campaign. The Argentine coach is going to discuss face-to-face talks with the defender to convince him to ink down a new contract here at Stamford Bridge.

It is also understood that Colwill will only renew his contract if he is guaranteed frequent game time at Chelsea. Given the Blues already have the likes of Thiago Silva, Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, and Benoit Badiashile, it is far from a given.

It will be one of our biggest mistakes to sell one of our top defenders to a rival team. We have already sent the likes of Mateo Kovacic to Manchester City, Kai Havertz to Arsenal, and now Mason Mount to Manchester United. Sending Colwill to Liverpool is basically strengthening another of our rivals, especially one who knows how to get the best out of their players.

Colwill certainly can play a key role next season under Pochettino because he has shown his attributes during his time at Brighton. A special talent, he has a high ceiling and it is key that we convince him that his future lies at Stamford Bridge.
