Chelsea working towards signing 23-year-old star after Man United hesitation

Chelsea are working on signing Diogo Costa following hesitance from Manchester United

As per Daily Express (h/t Sky Sports Transfer Live), Chelsea are working with Jorge Mendes to sign Porto keeper and Manchester United target Diogo Costa.

It seems like the Red Devils are hesitating to move forward with an offer for the Portugal international. They are now incidentally focused on getting Inter Milan’s number one Andre Onana.

With Edouard Mendy expectedly gone this summer, Chelsea could do with a goalkeeping addition in the coming days. Marcus Bettinelli signed a new deal but it would be a surprise if he is anything other than a third-choice stopper.

A few days ago, it was revealed that the Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino would start with Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal. Would that be a sensible choice given the Spaniard’s wobbliness in goal? Probably not.

Keeping those things in mind, it makes sense why they are working on a potential deal for Costa. The young Porto keeper has developed into a fantastic player after early stutters.

The 23-year-old is both good at shot-stopping and playing out from the back. His dominance in the six-yard box has gone up a level, which would be required if coming to the Premier League.

As much as you can try to ignore it, the goalkeeper is an important position for any football team. With a dodgy keeper, the team cannot win things. Kepa has done nothing to warrant a number one spot in the team from the start of the next season.

Hence, unless Porto demand something obnoxious, Chelsea should continue with their work on signing Costa this summer. Kepa then can play the number two role and work hard to earn his place in the side if required. He has done that in the past and is hopefully up for it once again.
