Chelsea will react in market to Wesley Fofana’s ACL injury

Chelsea’s fans worst fears have been confirmed as Wesley Fofana’s test results on a recent knee injury have returned and confirmed an ACL problem.

This means he is set to be sidelined for the start of the season. Last campaign, a knee injury prevented him from building any sort of momentum at the club after a huge £75million from Leicester City.

He has once again damaged his knee, and as per Fabrizio Romano, he has suffered an ACL injury — a notably serious and long-term issue. Chelsea’s 29-man squad for the USA pre-season tour was announced yesterday (July 17) and Fofana was left out.

The reason is now clearer than ever. It is a long-term injury that will, as per Romano, force Chelsea into the transfer market to look for a replacement. He says they will only act if there is a right option that pops up.

Chelsea must react

He also added that Levi Colwill remains not for sale. In fact, Chelsea’s stance has understandably grown stronger on the 20-year-old, who had a breakout 2022-23 season on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion. It only makes sense.

Chelsea must first get the Moises Caicedo deal from the Seagulls over the line and then give this newfound defensive issue their priority. Thiago Silva isn’t here for the long term but one can count on him to lead our backline next season.

Trevoh Chalobah isn’t exactly world-class yet but he has shown under Thomas Tuchel that he can do a steady job. Benoit Badiashile is young but the Frenchman should use Fofana’s injury as an opportunity to make his mark in the first XI.

Fofana won’t be out forever. But we should be on the lookout for a placeholder defender who can add depth and quality to the defence in the France international’s absence. If Mauricio Pochettino sticks a back four, we should be fine, considering Colwill is also waiting for a breakthrough here. But it wouldn’t hurt to get a new centre-back in, be it on loan until January.
