As per the Evening Standard, Chelsea are ready to sell young English defender Trevoh Chalobah this summer amidst interest from Serie A side Inter Milan.
It is revealed that Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino only wants four centre-back going into the start of the next season. They currently have four ahead of Chalobah in the pecking order – Thiago Silva, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile and Levi Colwill.
Inter are interested in the Englishman and they value him at around £25m. The player is in high spirits at the moment and is looking to play enough games that can warrant him being in contention to get selected for the national team for the upcoming Euros next year.
It is strange how things change in modern football. Chalobah signed a new six-year deal with Chelsea back in November. At that time, he must be thinking that his long-term future is at Stamford Bridge.
Fast forward to this summer and the new manager does not fancy him. He is a talented defender who can play as a centre-back, a right-back and a defensive midfielder and if he wants to keep developing and represent England, a move away from the Bridge could be the ideal solution.
The 24-year-old can make a move to Italy and virtually start his career from afresh. We have seen an unwanted Chelsea defender doing well in the Serie A in the recent past – Fikayo Tomori at AC Milan.
There is no reason why Chalobah cannot do that at Inter. Chelsea should accept whatever the Nerazzurri offer and let the player off their books sooner rather than later.
The Blues can use the money to add to their transfer kitty to hopefully make a few more additions to the squad this summer. They would need a striker and probably two midfielders. Whether they can get that is up to them and their negotiation tactics.
That being said, we have to keep in mind Silva’s age and the need for a long-term successor. But that is something we can deal with next year.
