Chelsea have confirmed the arrival of new signing Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal. The Senegal international signs an eight-year deal with the Blues.
It is revealed that Chelsea have spent slightly more than the 22-year-old player’s release clause of £30.1m to make the payment in their terms to Villarreal.
Jackson becomes the second arrival for the Blues this summer, days after Christopher Nkunku was announced following an agreement to sign the Frenchman during last season.
Since the departure of Diego Costa more than five years ago, Chelsea have signed a plethora of strikers but failed to find the one who converted the promise into a high amount of goals in a blue shirt.
Jackson becomes the club’s latest try to get a number nine who can form a good partnership with others in the final third and score a ton of goals for the team.
In his first senior season for Villarreal, the 22-year-old scored 13 goals in 38 appearances in all competitions. He played just over 2100 minutes in that time though (Transfermarkt).
He is a quick player with strong physical attributes and a good eye for a goal. It remains to be seen how Mauricio Pochettino deploys him in his system and if he will have to patiently wait for his chance like David Datro Fofana has since his January move.
The good part of this signing is that it is made a few days before the pre-season properly starts. Hence, the new manager will now have time with Jackson to discuss the playing style and how to get the best out of him.
On the other side of this, is it a risky signing for Chelsea given the player only has one season of senior football experience? We can say so. But, he has the talent to make it big if given the right direction. Under Pochettino, he is expected to be given that.
