Tottenham Hotspur seeking to trump Chelsea to the signing of Andre Onana

According to Sempre Inter (h/t football.london), Tottenham Hotspur have reached out to Inter Milan regarding a summer deal for Chelsea target Andre Onana.

The 27-year-old has been a major hit at the Giuseppe Meazza since arriving from Ajax Amsterdam last summer. He quickly displaced Samir Handanovic from the first XI and is today among Simone Inzaghi’s best players.

Onana is an excellent shot-stopper and commands his area well. He played a key role in the club’s UEFA Champions League campaign, helping them qualify for the final against Manchester City.

The Cameroonian ace’s performances have not gone unnoticed in London with Spurs and Chelsea both circling. The Blues lack a reliable number one and could part ways with both Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy this summer.

This makes bringing in a new goalkeeper a priority and Onana certainly fits the bill. The Inter star also has character and is a vocal presence who should fit right into the Stamford Bridge roster. Given Inter’s financial troubles, there is optimism that a favourable deal could be found for all parties involved.

Tottenham are also in the market for a new goalkeeper as Hugo Lloris’s time in north London winds down. The French veteran has been linked with a return to Ligue 1 and will leave a huge hole in terms of quality and leadership at the N-17.

While Tottenham have made the first move, Chelsea could yet hold an advantage in the pursuit of Onana. Inter are keen on Trevoh Chalobah and there could be reason to believe that the Blues can use the defender as a bargaining chip.

Not that we care about Tottenham’s struggles and it will be a double whammy for them should we beat them to the signing of Onana. Managerless and rudderless, Chelsea will be well placed to drive the knife in deeper, landing one of our biggest rivals a major blow.
