Thiago Silva has told Mauricio Pochettino that he wants to assist him in Chelsea’s initial rebuilding stage, (h/t Evening Standard).
The 38-year-old’s future is uncertain, and despite having extended his contract until 2024, he may leave the team once the transfer market opens.
The former Paris Saint-Germain player could join his boyhood club in Brazil and has received offers from Saudi Arabian teams. Given that we aren’t in Europe next season, it would be understandable if his head is swayed by other offers.
But Silva believes he has a few more seasons to play for Chelsea, though. The defender, who will turn 39 in September, has been voted Chelsea’s player of the season.
The Blues want to sell Kalidou Koulibaly, but the Senegalese defender is reluctant to leave, while Lewi Colwill will return to Stamford Bridge after completing his loan spell at Brighton Hove & Albion.
Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile, who are projected to be future defenders for Chelsea, are unlikely to be transferred considering they were brought in just last summer. Meanwhile, Trevoh Chalobah’s future is still up in the air, considering the Blues might sell him if an offer comes in for him.
It’s great to see Silva’s commitment to Chelsea despite the club’s poor performance. He has been sensational this season at 38 and can be a leader in the dressing room and a motivation for other young defenders.
However, if he is continuing at Chelsea, his game time might get limited under Pochettino, who could offer more action to other young defenders. In that case, if Silva wants to stay here, he will have to cooperate with the Argentine manager.
Fofana, Colwill, and Badiashile are seen as the club’s future defenders and are poised to take the reins from Silva. Chelsea have excellent depth at the back but it must be understood that there has to be leadership at the back, along with experience, especially when there are so many youngsters in question.
Silva has one year left on his deal at Stamford Bridge and he can do just that for us. His displays haven’t been bad and he seems way younger on the pitch than he already is. This can only be good news for the Blues.
