“Very reasonable”- Cesc Fabregas gives his verdict on inbound Chelsea manager

Cesc Fabregas reacts to Chelsea appointing Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager

Former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas hopes that the new Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino is good enough to bring the men’s team to where they belong – which is to fight and win for trophies.

A few days ago, Chelsea confirmed the appointment of Pochettino as their new manager. Frank Lampard took over the job on an interim basis following the sacking of Graham Potter in early April. Once the season ended, so was Lampard’s latest tenure as the Blues boss.

The last time Pochettino took a job at a club that was in a bit of a mess, he turned them into regular challengers for trophies and went all the way to the Champions League Final with them – Tottenham Hotspur. He developed young players there and got the best out of the experienced ones.

The Argentine needs to do something similar here if Chelsea are to slowly climb up the ladder following a bottom-half finish in the Premier League this season. Here’s what Fabregas said about the appointment and Pochettino (h/t The Athletic):

“I’ve played against him obviously when he was at Spurs and we’ve chatted after matches.

“I think he seems like a very reasonable man, very calm, that gives a lot of confidence to younger players and has a good structure and has a staff that he trusts so much.

“I hope he’s the right man to bring back Chelsea to the position where they belong.”

Having signed an unreasonable amount of players in the last two transfer windows, the first job Pochettino might have to do is decide which players to keep and who to sell. The bloated squad needs to be trimmed before he can start the groundwork of training them as per his tactical philosophy.

Out of all the negatives in the current Chelsea squad, the only good thing is that many talented young players just need direction and confidence from their manager.

Pochettino could be that man for them. If the boss starts to gel those young talents well and merge the experienced players into it, he can make a strong team at the start of next season.
