Enzo Fernandez’s father, Raul Fernandez, has urged Chelsea to allow the midfielder to play in a more attacking role.
Since joining the Blues, Fernandez has played as No. 6 in midfield, which has limited his creativity in the middle of the pitch. That is a position he has played in before, doing so for Argentina and SL Benfica in the past year or so.
His British-record signing has demonstrated the type of service he can offer as a midfielder, while the other midfielders have struggled to mesh effectively with the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner.
According to the father of the former Benfica star, Fernandez is more than simply a No. 6 player and ought to play more strategically on the field. Speaking during the interview, (h/t Express) he talked about his life in London and said:
“Enzo is comfortable, happy, and adjusting to London. He was happy about the arrival of Pochettino. Next season? My son wants to be a champion. I think we will see Enzo play further forward! He was going to ask [Pochettino] to play further advanced.”
If Moises Caicedo joins Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion, it will be extremely beneficial for the 22-year-old player, as it will allow the Argentine to play in a higher role while Caicedo can share some of the defensive duties.
Given that he is a creative midfielder who can pick teammates with his long passes and create scoring opportunities, the 22-year-old is more of a no. 8 than a no. 6. He has been compelled to operate as the number 6, which has restricted his ability to innovate because there is no defensive midfielder who can cover for him.
Fernandez will have a lot of freedom playing in midfield if Chelsea are successful in acquiring Caicedo – or another midfielder who can take up defensive responsibilities. But we have to be mindful that Fernandez fits in well in whatever system we play.
Fernandez is not very fast and there were occasions last season when he was slow to track back. If he plays too far up the pitch, then he could struggle to help out defensively on fast counter attacks. He is young, though, and that is a part of his game Mauricio Pochettino can hone well in the coming years.
