Chelsea and other European clubs are showing interest in Manchester United target Kim Min-jae who could leave Napoli in the upcoming summer transfer window.
As per Foot Mercato, (h/t ESPN) United’s talks over the signing of the 26-year-old have halted. This has opened the gates for other European clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United to enter the fray.
The 26-year-old has enjoyed a successful season at Napoli, winning the Serie A title. United remains the frontrunner to sign the South Korean, although the talks have stalled for now. Min-jae was awarded the title of the best defender in the Italian league this season and is certainly a player on the rise.
However, the Blues are already stacked with centre-backs, but there is a report that a few could leave in the summer window. Benoit Badiashile, Levi Colwill, and Wesley Fofana are among the defenders who will have a crucial role to play next season under Mauricio Pochettino.
While the futures of Thiago Silva, Kalidiou Koulibaly, and Trevoh Chalobah remain unclear. Silva has another 12 months left on his contract, while the Senegalese could be sold by Chelsea after an underwhelming debut campaign in England.
Chalobah wants to prove his worth in the following campaign, and it will be challenging to play frequently. Pochettino could prefer other centre-backs over him, given the disparity in quality. We currently have six defenders, and if we are going to offload at least three, then the club could consider signing Kim.
Chelsea had previously been engaged in a transfer with Napoli when they landed Koulibaly. However, signing another defender does not seem to be a priority for the club at this moment in time.
We need to trim down our already too-large roster, sell peripheral players to generate some profit, and add important priority signings like a midfielder, striker, or custodian.
Newcastle United and PSG are also among the clubs interested in signing him. The Ligue 1 club will need a replacement for Sergio Ramos, who left the club, while the Magpies will have to reinforce their backline as they will be competing in the Champions League next season.
