Chelsea are negotiating a deal for Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, as per Gianlucadimarzio.com.
The Blues seem to be actively looking for a new goalkeeper. Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy just haven’t cut it and they haven’t been convincing over the course of last season.
Mendy (31) isn’t a long-term option for us and both he and Kepa would be on first-team wages. We can’t afford to have two good goalkeepers in the team who are paid well.
Well, maybe we can and we have for a couple of seasons. But it just seems like throwing money. We can adopt the tried and tested tactic of having either a very young (Gabriel Slonina, 19) or a past-his-best old goalkeeper to serve as a No. 2
And as our No. 1, we can then have someone who is the cream of the crop – someone like Inter Milan’s Andre Onana. Sanchez, 25, is also a good option.
He has been very good for an impressive Brighton & Hove Albion side who finished fifth this season. He gave them a solid base to build on from the back and most importantly, has great footwork.
To add to that, he is confident and brave when the ball comes into the box. We need a goalkeeper who puts himself on the line to save his clean sheet and Robert Sanchez seems to be of that mould.
A move to Chelsea would also be a step up for him, with all due respect to the Seagulls, who finished above this season. It would give him more attention and spotlight, and he can hope to increase his number of caps for Spain from two.
