Kalidou Koulibaly could leave for Al-Hilal just one season after signing for Chelsea from Napoli. This is according to trusted journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.
Last summer was a hectic one for Chelsea. Apart from having new owners (Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital), the Blues had a serious defensive headache to solve.
Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger’s exits on free transfers meant Chelsea had to replace two world-class defenders who left without letting the club get anything in return for them.
Kalidou Koulibaly seemed like a safe option from Napoli for owners that were getting to grips with owning a massive football team in Europe. He has been a total disappointment since then.
Rash, error-prone and inconsistent, Koulibaly doesn’t look anything like the player he was at Napoli for all these years. Things have come to a point where Chelsea can let him leave in the summer window.
Di Marzio states that Al-Hilal are willing to offer a massive wage package of €30m-a-year for the Senegal international. Such figures could be hard to turn down for a 31-year-old who could be on the decline.
If his performances don’t improve for us, then his valuation will only decrease in the future. This could be a chance for us to get a decent fee for him while he still has three years left on his contract.
Time will tell if Koulibaly and Chelsea are open to letting Al-Hilal get their wish. We have Thiago Silva for at least another season while Levi Colwill is akin to a new signing for us, so Koulibaly’s exit may not sting, especially if we sign a younger, better player in his place.
