As per Daily Mail, Mauricio Pochettino sees Mason Mount as a key player in the Chelsea squad if he becomes the Blues boss in the coming summer.
The Argentine is a big admirer of the England international’s work ethic and technical qualities on the ball. But, the 24-year-old’s contract at Stamford Bridge expires next summer (Transfermarkt).
Mount is yet to agree on an extension yet. Liverpool and Arsenal are keeping an eye on him. Chelsea need money from player sales to balance the books in the summer. The Guardian has reported that Todd Boehly and co. are looking to sell players who have their contracts expiring in a year’s time. Mateo Kovacic is on that boat and is likely to leave too.
If we ignore the current season (which has been bad for every Chelsea player), Mount has been one of the best players in the Chelsea team over the past two seasons.
He is a technically strong player who can create chances, can score goals, can play multiple positions across the midfield and forward line and is a strong worker off the ball. He has what it takes to be successful in the modern game.
There is a reason why Thomas Tuchel kept playing him and made him a key member of the squad. Pochettino liking him is of no surprise to us.
But, given Chelsea’s situation, they are probably backed into a corner to let go of the 24-year-old. They anyway have to trim the bloated squad after signing 15 players in the last two transfer windows.
If or when Mount leaves, not many in the current Blues squad would be able to replace him. The other devastating part is that he may play for one of the Premier League rivals next season onward.
