Bundesliga duo including Bayern Munich interested in 25-year-old Chelsea midfield target

Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are interested in signing Chelsea target Edson Alvarez

As per Football.London, Chelsea could be dealt with a blow as their potential transfer target Edson Alvarez may move to Germany with interest from Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

The Blues wanted to sign Alvarez later on in the previous summer window, but Ajax rejected a £43m bid as they did not want to lose any more players in that window. The Mexican international was furious by that decision and talked about it months later with the hope to make the eventual move sooner than later.

In December, Express reported that Todd Boehly would give another try to sign the defensive midfielder in the January window. As it turned out, Chelsea spent a British transfer record fee to get Enzo Fernandez from Benfica on the deadline day. They signed seven more players to swell the squad and destroy the season.

Alvarez, 25, a defensive midfielder who can play as a centre-back, might have been a cheaper and more versatile addition to the squad. But, with no European football next season, can Chelsea attract the Mexican as they did last summer? We never know.

Heading into this summer, the Blues have a lot of other problems to deal with as well. The apparent need for a striker is there for everyone to see. They are linked with an ambitious move for Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, although it seems unlikely.

Evening Standard has reported that the club has added Brentford striker Ivan Toney to the transfer shortlist. That move may have taken a big blow with the 27-year-old now banned from playing football for eight months for breaking the FA betting regulations.

Hence, the potential to miss out on Alvarez may not be as big a blow as before. With N’Golo Kante interested to be a part of the future, the club should focus on offering him a new contract very soon.

With no UEFA Champions League football next season, and given Bayern’s clout and Dortmund’s penchant for offering a pedestal for up-and-coming players to strut their stuff, Chelsea are in real trouble when it comes to signing the Ajax star.
