As per a tweet from transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are understood to have completed the signing of Alex Matos on a free transfer from Championship side Norwich City.
The documents and contracts have been signed and sealed in the last 24 hours. The signing of Matos is part of the Jim Fraser plan (Chelsea Academy manager) plan to build a top U21 squad at the club.
The 18-year-old was part of the Luton Town Academy before joining the Norwich youth side in July 2017. He is a versatile player who has 42 times for the Canaries’ U18 side and 18 times for the U21 outfit (Transfermarkt).
Matos is a winger who has played as a central midfielder. He has been used as a fullback and an attacking midfielder as well. At his age, the more he plays, the better he will have an idea of what his strongest position on the field is.
Chelsea have spent a lot of money on bright young players since the Todd Boehly-Behdad Eghbali takeover. They would hope to develop them into proper first-team players and either sell them for profit or induct them into the Blues’ senior side.
While this part of the business is running well, the club needs to do a lot to prepare a senior squad capable of playing better football next season.
Having signed loads of players in the last two transfer windows, the Chelsea squad is bloated with numbers not many can imagine. We have to make sure we balance the signings of future prospects with signings that strengthen the team instantly as well.
It is time to get rid of the deadwood in the summer and allow the new manager to take charge of what he needs from the current crop and who all need to be signed to elevate the standard of the playing lot.
