Real Madrid to break the bank for 23-year-old Chelsea defensive star

Real Madrid to offer £90 million for Chelsea right-back Reece James

According to Football Espana, Real Madrid are prepared to make a significant bid for Chelsea defender Reece James and are willing to pay £90 million to acquire his services.

The defending European champions will have the opportunity to take a closer look at the 23-year-old when they play the Blues in the final eight of this season’s UEFA Champions League. James signed a six-year contract with Chelsea last September, that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2028, (Transfermarkt).

After being promoted to the first squad, James has experienced a rapid climb. The right-back didn’t need much time to establish himself as a starting player for Chelsea and is also a regular for England.

The 23-year-old, however, has experienced a disappointing season this year due to repeated ailments that have limited his game time to just 13 Premier League games so far this season. Madrid will undoubtedly put Chelsea to the test by making a bid of £90 million for the England international, giving them a long-term replacement for Daniel Carvajal.

The Spaniard’s recent inefficiencies have left Real Madrid without a standout right-back, while Lucas Vazquez is far from world-class. Add to it, James’s ability on the dead ball and Madrid can help him take the next step in his development.

Chelsea, however, faces the same issue with a lack of options in the position. Malo Gusto has since been acquired by the West Londoners to serve as James’ backup and is likely to keep the Englishman on his toes from next season.

Given that there aren’t many right-backs of James’ calibre, £90 million is insufficient for him; he is worth much more than that.

The 23-year-old is one of the best Chelsea players to graduate from the Blues’ academy. He is still young and has undoubtedly addressed Chelsea’s right-back problems for many years to come.

Even if we contemplate selling him, we will have to find a backup for him since Gusto is will be the only right-back we will be left with, so, we’ll need depth at right back. Nonetheless, we should not sell him, and if we do, then the board would be incredibly foolish to do so.
