Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp declared himself the last man standing following the dismissal of Graham Potter from Chelsea after the 2-0 loss to Aston Villa,
The Englishman who was appointed following an outstanding stint with Brighton Hove & Albion failed to lead Chelsea in the direction that Todd Boehly wants. If anything, it calls into question the club’s decision to part ways with Thomas Tuchel earlier in the campaign.
Potter won only 12 of the 31 games in charge and saw the club plummet to the 11th spot in the Premier League standings. The 47-year-old clearly fell short of expectations at Stamford Bridge.
However, Potter wasn’t the only manager fired last weekend; Leicester City also sacked Brendan Rodgers, who was enduring a poor season with the Foxes.
Formerly an assistant coach, Bruno Saltor will serve as Chelsea’s interim manager for the time being. The Blues could decide whom to appoint before the end of the season.
The Blues will now play Liverpool, who are facing a frustrating season as well. The Reds are now eighth in the rankings and are coming off a 4-1 loss to Manchester City. Upon Potter and Rogers’ dismissal, (h/t Metro) Klopp responded:
‘’What can I say about that? The elephant in the room is how I am still sitting here in this crazy world. The last man standing”
Since Klopp joined Liverpool in 2015, the Reds board has supported him despite the club’s numerous successes and failures. Last season, they came very close to winning the quadruple, but this season, their ageing team and inconsistent performance have prevented them from continuing their last season’s form.
Consider how different the situation would have been if Todd Boehly had done this with Potter. Fans and owners find it extremely difficult to remain patient because they demand instant rewards.
Potter is unquestionably a great manager; he built Brighton into a force in the Premier League, and if we had given him more time until the conclusion of the year, he may have been capable of shifting the course of events.
