Frank Lampard waxes lyrical about ‘fantastic’ 28-year-old superstar despite slow start at Chelsea

Frank Lampard feel Raheem Sterling is still one of the best players despite his poor start at Chelsea

Despite Raheem Sterling’s rocky start at the club, interim manager Frank Lampard supported the 28-year-old and said he continues to be among the top players in the Premier League.

Sterling, who moved from Manchester City to Chelsea in the summer transfer window for £47.5 million, has not been able to pick up his form in West London.

Moreover, injuries have disrupted his seasons and limited the number of games he has played under three different managers.

The 28-year-old has scored four goals in 21 Premier League appearances since joining Chelsea. He also featured against Wolves but couldn’t help his side prevail in the game, which they lost 1-0.

However, despite the former Manchester City forward’s shaky start at Chelsea, (h/t Daily Mail), Lampard has hailed the England international and hinted that he will hand him considerable playing time in the coming weeks.

“Raheem has been there and done it, and there’s a history of producing. I think he’s a fantastic player. He’s been one of the best wingers in the world for a long time, and at times, maybe in some people’s opinion, the best.

‘’He’s risen to games like that before in the past, so that’s something we’ll obviously rely on in terms of this because some elements of the squad are maybe a bit younger.”

Despite missing half of the season due to injury, Sterling has netted four goals in 21 league games, and he only has three fewer goals than Kai Havertz, who has played in 29 games in the league. This proves that the England international is having a reasonable season.

The 28-year-old, who plays on the left, is a seasoned goal scorer who has proven himself on several occasions. One of those was his opening goal against Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of the Champions League, which culminated in a comeback for the Blues.

Even though Havertz has scored a couple of goals recently, he has largely been poor in front of goal because he just isn’t a natural finisher. Let’s see if the Germany international starts over Sterling in the false nine position. He is a player Lampard didn’t get to manage during his first spell in SW6.

Nevertheless, he will know the former Manchester City winger’s quality and could count upon him for goals in his time as caretaker boss.
