Chelsea suffer a blow in their quest to appoint a permanent manager as Carlo Ancelotti expressed his desire to respect his contract at Real Madrid.
The Italian master tactician revealed that he has a contract with the European champions until the end of next season, and he wants to respect that.
A few weeks ago, it was reported that the former Chelsea boss will take over the Brazil job at the end of this season, while Chelsea were interested in bringing him back to Stamford Bridge after sacking Graham Potter last Sunday.
But, speaking to Radio Rai 1 (h/t Football.London), Ancelotti may have given Brazil and Chelsea a blow in one sentence. Here’s what he said:
“There’s a nice saying which is just right: the wind carries away the chatter. And that’s it, I have a contract until June 30, 2024 and I’d like to respect it.”
The 63-year-old, who has won the Champions League four times and lifted many other trophies during his time as a manager over the last two decades, could have been an ideal calming influence in the Chelsea dugout after seeing what has happened to this club since the American takeover.
But, the Blues have potentially lined up other options for the permanent role, with former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique and recently-sacked Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann approached.
These two aren’t bad options as well because they both possess experience, better tactical nous than Potter and are excellent solution-finders even in the toughest of circumstances.
Having made weird decisions since the start of this season, the Chelsea owners have to nail their next appointment. Moreover, the person appointed needs to be backed with a significant timeline and a strategised approach to transfer windows. The crazy spending of money to sign players helps no one at the club.
Missing out on potentially getting Ancelotti could be a blow for the Blues, but it may not be as big because the other options are elite too.
