Manchester United join Manchester City in race for Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic

Premier League rivals Manchester United have ‘joined’ Manchester City in the race to sign Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic, according to 90min (h/t Manchester Evening News).

Erik ten Hag’s team are ‘exploring’ the possibility of acquiring the Croatia international’s services from the Blues. His current contract at the Stamford Bridge side is set to expire at the end of next season (transfermarkt).

The Red Devils are prioritising the addition of a central midfielder in the upcoming transfer window. However, apart from the Old Trafford side and Pep Guardiola’s team, Liverpool also have the 28-year-old on their radar.

United bolstered their midfield ranks in the summer of 2022 with the addition of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen to their squad. The Brazilian was bought from Real Madrid, while the Danish national signed for the Red Devils as a free agent.

Ten Hag can also call upon the likes of Fred, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek. The Old Trafford side also got Marcel Sbaitzer on loan from Bayern Munich in January.

As for City, they have Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne at their disposal. The Sky Blues also added Kalvin Phillips to their engine room last summer.

Kovacic made his way to Chelsea in the summer of 2018 from Real Madrid. Since then, the Croatian has been one of our most consistent players, cementing his place in the starting lineup.

Apart from the 28-year-old, Potter can count on January signing Enzo Fernandez and N’Golo Kante. However, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Conor Gallagher and Denish Zakaria leave a lot to be desired.

Therefore, we evidently lack quality in depth in the middle of the park. Thus, it would be wise of us to extend Kovacic’s stay and fend off the other clubs interested in him.
