Chelsea board backs Mauricio Pochettino to continue for entire season amid sack rumours
At a gathering for Chelsea supporters, Graham Potter encouraged the fans and gave them optimism for a dream Champions League run. After Potter replaced the sacked Thomas Tuchel, the 47-year-old’s stint at Chelsea was beset by an inconsistent run of results.
Though his tenure began well, things quickly deteriorated as a result of players’ skewed performances and frequent injuries. It saw the Blues go on a losing streak and fall to tenth place in the Premier League standings.
From November to February, the former Brighton manager tested the patience of the supporters with a run of only two victories in 16 games. However, the mood at Stamford Bridge has shifted now that Potter can breathe a sigh of relief after three straight victories.
Chelsea are the only team from London, while Manchester City is the other club from the Premier League that is in the quarterfinals of the Champions League. While it won’t be easy, we can always dream of a third European crown.
Moreover, fans are beginning to trust Potter, and the 47-year-old has thanked them for sticking with him no matter what. When pressed for his word to the fans on the occasion, the manager (h/t Mirror), Potter, replied:
“Firstly, thank you because they’ve been incredibly fair with us, they’ve stuck with the team, and the support we’ve had has been amazing.”
“And we’ll need them on Saturday—we’ll try to beat Everton, then we’ll take the draw, and then we’ll try to win the f****** Champions League!”
Potter’s demeanour has evolved over his time at Chelsea; he is now self-assured and slowly learning about the clubs and the areas in which the players may prosper.
Fans expect a manager to have a persona like this, not a frivolous one. A manager should be above the players and should not be overpowered by them. Also, he is beginning to take a more active role in the dugout, pushing players and confronting officials for their poor judgement—something he hardly did in the post-match interview.
And we certainly hope that he remains in this manner because Chelsea are a team that needs a world-class manager with sterling character.
