Christian Pulisic sent a positive message to teammates as Chelsea drew defending champions Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarter final draw.
Pulisic made his first appearance since picking up an injury in January against his former club, Borussia Dortmund. Since then, he has appeared in Chelsea’s last two games as a substitute. Anthony Hudson has even called up the 24-year-old for the USMNT for the international break.
A few encouraging performances from Pulisic have given optimism that he could rediscover his mojo in time for the match against Real Madrid. The Blues have to be at their best to down the Spanish heavyweights.
Chelsea are reportedly the seventh favourite to win the championship, after Manchester City, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid, who are the top three favourites to win the Champions League final in Istanbul.
Despite the odds, Pulisic has reminded the fans that the Blues were in a comparable circumstance in the 2020–21 season when Tuchel replaced the fired Frank Lampard. Yet they managed to win the match by overcoming teams like Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and eventually Manchester City in the championship game.
During his interview with ESPN (h/t FootballLondon), the former Dortmund player was asked if it would be simple. He responded as follows:
“No. Are we going to have big fights, tough battles, and big teams that we’re going to play against to get there? 100%, but we’re ready for it, and we’re excited by the challenge.”
Despite uncertainties and injury issues, it’s encouraging to see that Pulisic is confident in his ability to play against Real Madrid. We hope he regains his rhythm before the game since he is still a crucial player for the Blues and will have a big influence.
Potter then has the option of playing Pulisic or Raheem Sterling on the left wing due to the possibility that Mykhaylo Mudryk will be suspended for the second match.
Prior to the Champions League match, our attention will be on the Premier League, as we have many crucial matches and an international break in between.
