Journo rubbishes Bayern Munich interest in Chelsea midfielder

Bayern Munich are not in the race to sign Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic

Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has revealed that German champions Bayern Munich are not in the race to sign Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic.

After the arrival of former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel to Munich, reports were circling around that he would raid the west London club, with a move for Kovacic being earmarked as one.

But, the latest revelations have put those rumours to bed. The Croatian’s future at Stamford Bridge is under scanner regardless though. His current contract expires in 2024, with no talks of an extension yet.

A few weeks ago, it was reported that defending Premier League champions Manchester City are interested in signing him. Remains to be seen whether that will be the case come the summer.

Kovacic has been an excellent servant for Chelsea since arriving from Real Madrid. Injuries have curtailed his progress from time to time. But, whenever he is on the pitch, we expect and get very good things from him.

Graham Potter could change things up in the midfield by bringing new faces in though. He has Enzo Fernandez from the January window, while the race is on for Declan Rice and the club would give their best shot to get Jude Bellingham.

If Kovacic is sold in the summer (even if not to Bayern as per the latest report), it would be in keeping with the changes in the squad made due to a crazy number of signings made in the last two transfer windows.

Moreover, as good as the 28-year-old is, if we get a better player – namely Rice, Bellingham or even Moises Caicedo (who we are linked with as well), it won’t a massive loss by letting him go in the summer.
