Speaking to CaughtOffside (h/t Football.London), former Nottingham Forest and Liverpool striker Stan Collymore warns Chelsea against signing Paris-Saint Germain and Brazil star Neymar.
A few days ago, it was reported in Metro that Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly had meetings with the PSG president to discuss the possibility of signing the former Barcelona forward.
While the French side are convinced of letting go of Neymar in the coming summer, it won’t be easy for any club to sign him given the wages he is currently on.
Here’s what Collymore said when asked whether Chelsea should sign the 31-year-old (h/t Football.London):
“Neither Manchester club should take him and Chelsea definitely don’t need him [Neymar]. I think Neymar is a fantastic player but joining Chelsea would be an awful move in my opinion because the Blues’ project is to build for the future.
“If Neymar were to come to Stamford Bridge, you could just imagine much of Graham Potter’s time in front of the media would be taken up by questions on the Brazilian.”
One would understand what Collymore is trying to say. Neymar, whether you like it or not, is the centre of attention wherever he goes. Because he can be a divisive character, the attention centred around him is mostly a bad thing for the club. PSG can tell us about that.
Moreover, the Brazil international is close to the twilight of his career. Having seen the profile and age of players signed by Chelsea in the last two transfer windows, it would be a surprise that they would be interested in getting a 31-year-old who might not really do much.
Boehly seems to have an obsession with making a marquee signing per se. He was adamant to get Cristiano Ronaldo last summer, only for previous manager Thomas Tuchel to reject the notion.
We are struggling to score. The creativity is not lacking with the plethora of attacking midfielders in the side. The only thing this team needs is someone at the top who can score 20+ goals per season.
Chelsea are linked with Napoli striker Victor Osimhen for a summer move. We should concentrate on getting him rather than expending energy and money on Neymar.
