With the pressure mounting on Chelsea boss Graham Potter following another defeat, the Telegraph reports some of the reasons why the club owners won’t sack him.
If things were not bad enough, the Blues conspired to lose at home to Southampton, a team that can barely buy a point in the Premier League.
That result meant that Potter’s men have now won only two of their 14 league games. It keeps them 10th in the table, 11 points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.
One of the reasons behind the non-sacking of the manager is the fact that he always puts players and the club ahead of him and does not point fingers at others for the failure.
He did come under severe pressure after not picking Thiago Silva and Reece James against Southampton. Later it was cleared that the medical staff warned him not to use those two players as they are at risk of picking up an injury.
The other reason is the timing of the appointment of Potter. He left a stable environment at Brighton and joined Chelsea on September 8, just after the start of the season.
The Chelsea hierarchy believes that Potter deserves a full pre-season with the squad and then judge the results that come with it. This point tells us that the manager will be in charge of the team till the end of this season unless something drastic happens.
The Blues appointed Paul Winstanley, who worked with Potter at Brighton and had a good relationship for bringing players of the latter’s choice. Chelsea owners believe the duo need more time to work their magic at Stamford Bridge, citing an example of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, who took some time before getting the right results.
While it shows that the owners are going to trust the process and back their man, something has to give soon. The preferred thing would be the turn of events on the field and us winning some games.
