Manchester City and Chelsea looking at each other’s stars ahead of the summer

Joao Cancelo being eyed by Chelsea as Manchester City linked with Ben Chilwell

Manchester City star Joao Cancelo, who is on loan at Bayern Munich, is being eyed by Chelsea, with Ben Chilwell linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium, according to 90min (h/t football.london).

The Portugal international decided to join the Bavarians on a temporary basis until the end of the season in the previous transfer window. Pep Guardiola had opted against using the 28-year-old on a regular basis since his return from the 2022 World Cup.

As a result, the Bundesliga giants were happy to acquire Cancelo’s services. But the German outfit are not willing to pay the £61 million buy option to permanently sign the Portuguese.

Bayern are interested in negotiating a lower price for the full-back. As a result, the Blues have been handed a chance to be in the mix for the 28-year-old’s signature.

Chelsea signed Marc Cucurella in the summer of 2022 to bolster the left-hand side of our defence. Unfortunately, the Spain international has failed to live up to expectations as of yet.

On the other hand, Chilwell has had his injury issues over the years. As a result, the England international has not been a reliable player. However, the 26-year-old performs well whenever he is called upon.

At City, the left-back spot is a bit short-staffed. Nathan Ake and Aymeric Laporte, who are centre-backs by trait, have been deployed on the left at times. Recently against Tottenham Hotspur, 18-year-old Rivo Lewis was also relied upon by Guardiola in that position.

Cancelo is one of the best full-backs in the world at the moment. While naturally a right-footed player, the Portuguese is impressive on the left as well.

However, it remains to be seen whether the Blues will opt to pursue the 28-year-old. Also, will the Sky Blues try to convince Chilwell to switch sides? Only time will tell.
