Graham Potter gives verdict on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future at Chelsea

Graham Potter on the future of Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Speaking with the media ahead of the next game (h/t Football.London), Chelsea boss Graham Potter has addressed the question regarding the future of striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Since signing for Chelsea on the deadline day of the summer transfer window, Aubameyang hasn’t had a very good first season at Stamford Bridge.

He has scored only three goals so far and has not been a regular starter in the team. To add to that, Potter dropped him from the Champions League squad for the knockout stages.

The 33-year-old has made one appearance off the bench in the last few weeks and has not been in the match-day squad for the last four games. Here’s what Potter said when asked about the future of the striker (h/t Football.London):

“Yes, he does [future of Aubameyang at Chelsea]. He’s competing for a place in the squad, has had a really good training week to the situation we’ve been in. He’s available for selection.”

Days after Chelsea lost at home to Southampton, Aubameyang was seen playing friendly games in Italy. What this comment from Potter tells us is that the former Arsenal marksman is back with the squad that is preparing for a tough game against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Despite the rotten form, which amounts to only two wins from the last 14 league games, it feels as if the Blues are missing just a piece or two before winning games consistently.

One of those pieces is the absence of a proper number nine who can find the back of the net. Chelsea have scored only six goals in 11 games since the World Cup.

So, there is a legitimate case for Potter to start Aubameyang in the coming league games. Granted that the 33-year-old hasn’t done much in a Chelsea shirt so far, he is still one of the few players in the squad who can score goals at a good rate.
