“Stick together”- Potter speaks up against Chelsea star being made a regular scapegoat

Graham Potter feels Marc Cucurella being singled out for recent Chelsea displays

Chelsea manager Graham Potter feels Marc Cucurella is being singled out, with the Blues struggling to find positive results in recent weeks.

The Stamford Bridge side have won just one game in 2023, 1-0 against Crystal Palace in the Premier League. We have managed to find the back of the net just once in our last four matches.

This season, the former Brighton & Hove Albion star has featured in a majority of our games. At the start, the 24-year-old put in some encouraging performances. However, it has been downhill ever since.

Defensively, the Spain international has looked a bit suspect defensively. The full-back has also not been able to contribute a lot in the final third.

Speaking to the media via Metro, Potter wants to help Cucurella to turn things around. However, the gaffer believes the West London club are not losing due to an individual.

“The results that we are having, where we are in the table, unfortunately somebody will be getting the brunt of the criticism. Marc is a big boy, he is an adult, has kids, he knows the situation. We have to help him change perspective on this.

“We are not losing because of one individual, one person. We are a team and we need to stick together.”

Ben Chilwell has had injury issues during his time at Chelsea. In the previous campaign, we were left without adequate cover for the England international, with Marcos Alonso struggling. With the 32-year-old joining Barcelona last summer, we evidently needed reinforcements.

As a result, Cucurella’s services were acquired. The Spain international was one of the best full-backs in the Premier League in the previous campaign.

Unfortunately, the 24-year-old has struggled to fit in at the club. The Spain international has been thrust into the team during a tough period. In the current campaign, he has made 26 appearances in all competitions, providing two assists.

However, while Cucurella has not lived up to expectations in West London, other players have been underwhelming as well. Thus, it does not seem fair to single out. Rather, the 24-year-old should be backed and given the confidence to help the full-back regain his confidence.
