Fabrizio Romano say Chelsea were another option for Cody Gakpo before he joined Liverpool

Prior to Liverpool convincing Cody Gakpo to join them from PSV Eindhoven, Chelsea also expressed interest in signing the 23-year-old.

The Blues were one of the clubs that were most active and along with Marcus Thuram and Mykhaylo Mudryk, Gakpo was one of the players on their radar. While Mudryk did arrive at Stamford Bridge, the same cannot be said of the other two stars.

23-year-old Gakpo joined the Merseyside giants instead of Chelsea because he was more persuaded by Liverpool’s vision. The Reds might be struggling at the minute but still have Jurgen Klopp at the helm to change things around.

Gakpo finally opened his Liverpool goalscoring account against Everton .

Reliable Italian Journalist Fabrizio Roman provides thoughts on Gakpo’s signing to Liverpool in the midst of Blues’ interest. Romano claimed that a move to Chelsea were not imminent in an article despite interest from the Blues as per his exclusive column on for CaughtOffside’s exclusive Daily Briefing:

“Chelsea were just informed on Cody Gakpo deal conditions as they were for Marcus Thuram and many others, but top priority in that position was always Mykhaylo Mudryk; Chelsea didn’t even open talks with PSV.” .

“Gakpo was happy about Liverpool’s plans and how convinced they were about him.”

Gakpo, though, was on Manchester United’s radar as well, but Liverpool moved quickly to sign the player to a contract on Merseyside after his outstanding tenure at PSV, where he scored nine goals in 14 games.

However, given that the Dutch player hasn’t been at ease in his new life at Anfield, struggling to impress. However he looked sharper after breaking his goalscoring duck against Everton and has the quality to ride on the momentum.

Mudryk seems to settle at Chelsea.

In addition, Chelsea lacks a consistent goal scorer this season whereas Liverpool contains Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez, and now Diego Jota and Robert Firmino, both of who are back fit.

The pressure to perform and end the club’s striker curse would have been higher at Chelsea, though, if we had acquired him. More so, it would have been a poor decision to bring a player with little faith in the club’s vision into the roster.

More Chelsea News:

Since just a select few number nines have been able to establish their dominance at Stamford Bridge over the years, we have not seen many true attackers. And once, when the summer transfer window opens, finding a bonafide striker will remain a top priority for Todd Boehly and Graham Potter.
