According to the Guardian, Chelsea have hired the mental skills coach and manager of the All Blacks side Gilbert Enoka in a short-term consultancy-based role.
Enoka, who introduced the “no dickhead policy” in the New Zealand rugby team setup, has worked with the New Zealand cricket and netball team in the past. He has been working with the All Blacks side since 2000 in various roles.
Enoka worked only as a mental skills coach for the rugby side till 2015 and then took over the role of the team manager. During his stint, the All Blacks side won back-to-back World Cups in 2011 and 2015.
He will presumably work as a supporting cast to Chelsea manager Graham Potter and handle the mental side of the game with the players. Looking at his CV and robust approach, this seems like a great appointment for the Blues.
Having signed a lot of new players in the last two transfer windows, the club must create an environment where players are not just physically fit, but mentally ready to fight for the badge in every game.
Enoka’s track record and history smack of a character who will make the Chelsea players mentally strong to deal with any situation on the field.
Whatever is said about Todd Boehly and co. in the media and by rival supporters, he is doing everything in his power to back the manager and make a strong team that can challenge for top honours in years to come.
While spending big money seemed crazy at times, it had a pattern. Now, with the appointment of one of the mental coaches in the sports industry, he is surrounding the players with the best possible personnel to work with.
