Graham Potter admits Chelsea star’s contract situation is ‘complicated’

Chelsea boss Graham Potter offers his verdict on the contractual situation of Mason Mount

Speaking to the media ahead of the Southampton game (h/t Evening Standard), Chelsea boss Graham Potter offers his verdict on the complicated contractual situation of Mason Mount by hoping things get resolved soon.

Mount has less than 18 months left in his current contract at Chelsea. If he does not sign an extension before the summer, he will go into the end-of-season period with just a year left in the deal. There are already clubs circling the possibility of signing him in the summer, most notably Liverpool.

The 24-year-old is currently one of the lower-paid players in the squad. We all know that despite the recent lull in form, he has been one of Chelsea’s best players in the last two years. He wants wages in his new contract that reflects his status in the squad.

Speaking about the situation and hoping for it to get sorted out soon, here’s Potter (h/t Evening Standard):

“It is always complicated. There’s always negotiations. It is best that I leave it between Mason and the club.

“It is the best way for that to be dealt with. As far as I am concerned, he is fantastic to work with. He is an important player for us. I hope it gets resolved quickly.”

It is a complicated situation because as much as Mount is a Chelsea fan at heart and would want to stay here, he is right to demand wages which are at par with some of the top earners in the squad. If the new owners are not in favour of offering that, parting ways does sound like an obvious choice.

Irrespective of the lack of form this season, the 24-year-old is still a valuable player in the squad. His versatility at the middle and top end of the field is unmatched.

The England international has a lot of potential to become a candidate to lead Chelsea in the near future. If his own future is not sorted, we could lose a gem of a player, quite possibly to a direct rival in Liverpool.
