Graham Potter says Mykhaylo Mudryk debut against Liverpool could be on the cards

Graham Potter has suggested that Mykhaylo Mudryk’s debut could take place on Saturday (21 January) as Chelsea prepare to face Liverpool in their latest instalment.

For their next pivotal match of the season, the Blues will travel to Anfield, following a narrow 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

The victory relieved the former Brighton & Hove Albion manager of some of the burden he was under owing to a string of poor performances and numerous player injuries that affected Chelsea’s season thus far.

Under new owner Todd Boehly, Chelsea have made a myriad of acquisitions and seemingly don’t want to stop until they believe the squad is currently strong in all areas.

And one of their top signings came from Shakhtar Donetsk. Mudryk dominated the headlines as Boehly once again splurged on a youngster.

The Ukraine international’s signing has been surprising, as has how Chelsea were able to spend so much, as the club beat their rival Arsenal to his £88 million signing.

The player was present during Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Palace and will be hoping to make his debut against Liverpool. That’s certainly something the fans will be expecting given the hype surrounding the player.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference (h/t Football.London), Chelsea’s head coach hinted that the 22-year-old could make his debut against Liverpool. He said:

“He hasn’t played so much football recently but has been training well. There’s a chance he could make his debut. We’ve got to help everybody understand that he is coming from a different league and has to adapt.”

“He is a young player that has a lot of potentials but has had good experiences already. He is an exciting player. He’s very happy to be here. He is looking forward to his career here and looking forward to get started.”

Potter has assured that there is no pressure on the youngster and that it is acceptable if he takes time to get accustomed to playing in the league. He has long years ahead of him; the team is starting over, and Chelsea will be counting on Mudryk to do his part to restore the club’s lost status in the league and in Europe.

Fans could expect that Mudryk will start for Chelsea against Liverpool considering they currently don’t have a reliable left winger. But if he doesn’t, he could still come on as a substitute and hopefully make a significant impact and live up to his value.

It is important to remember that he is a youngster and this is going to be his first season in a hugely competitive league like the Premier League. Hopefully, he rises up to the expectations as soon as possible but if he doesn’t, fans shouldn’t lose patience.
