Chelsea are looking for a backup for Reece James, who limped out against Bournemouth after recovering from a knee injury. According to Simon Phillips of Si & Dan Talk Chelsea (h/t Football.London), Matty Cash may be an ideal backup full-back for the Blues.
Blues’ right-back options are restricted to James and César Azpilicueta. Azpilicueta is nearing the end of his career, and the club may be forced to hunt for a right-back alternative in the January transfer window.
Moreover, the Spaniard is also used as a centre-back and does not offer the same attacking mobility as James does. Cash, in that regard, could be a smart signing.
Although Chelsea are engaged in a handful of right-backs in January, including Pedro Porro, Josip Juranovic, Nahuel Molina, and Denzel Dumfries, Cash is the most recent addition to the list and one who is familiar with English football.
Some of these right-backs could be difficult to sign for the Blues considering that they are regular starters for their club. When James returns to full fitness, he will be keen to play in every match, which is where Chelsea could run into trouble when it comes to keeping the potential new signing happy.
Although the Poland international Matty Cash has been impressive for the Villans, he may be a suitable backup for James. A new right-back appears to be an objective for Chelsea in the January transfer window, according to Matt Law via Daily Telegraph (Subscription needed) (h/t Football.London).
However, it could be complicated because Chelsea have other priorities for the January transfer window, including a new midfielder and a striker.
Cash is still 25 years old and has experience playing in the Premier League. It would be a wise addition to our backline considering we need someone there to compete with our England international even when he is fit and available.
There are several areas in which Chelsea must invest, and James’ recurrent injuries have hampered Chelsea’s right-back position. We seem to have a number of options and each of them will have its own hurdles if we are to complete a deal for them.
Let’s hope that the club assesses its option and makes a wise decision at the end of the day. Since the potential new signing would largely have to be backup to James, it’s best to not invest a truckload of money on it.
