As per a tweet from the Official Chelsea Account, Chelsea have announced the signing of winger Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk while the team was in action against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.
It has been fast movements from the club since Saturday night’s updates on how the owners flew to Poland to offer the deal and complete the move.
There was a well-known from Arsenal in Mudryk, but the money they offered was gazumped by Chelsea. So, the Blues win this mini-transfer battle with the Gunners. Sky Sports reports that the deal is worth around £88.5m on a whopping eight-year deal.
The Ukraine international becomes the club’s fifth signing in the January transfer window. He, along with the loan signing of Joao Felix last week, has arrived to potentially sort the issues this team has up front in creating and scoring goals.
Mudryk had an excellent season for Shakhtar up until now. He scored 10 goals and assisted eight in 18 appearances in all competitions, including three goals and two assists in six Champions League games.
The 22-year-old is a left winger by trade who can play on the other side and as a number if required. He possesses an electric pace and great dribbling skills. He is good at both creating chances and scoring goals.
With injuries to Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic, Mudryk would add much-needed depth on the left-hand side. Moreover, the latter’s future at the club is up in the air.
Other than that, not much can be said about this signing. Is the player worth the money Chelsea has spent on him? No. Can he help do justice to it in years to come? Probably so.
It is a risky signing based on his performances of a small sample size in the Ukrainian league and a handful of Champions League games. We can only hope that Graham Potter has done his homework on the player.
