Petr Cech endorses 28-year-old Chelsea target playing for Everton

Transfer News: Petr Cech praises Chelsea target and England international Jordan Pickford

Former Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has praised Everton and England international Jordan Pickford. The Blues have been linked with a move for the keeper in recent months.

Cech who served as technical and performance advisor since 2019 was relieved of his duties after new owner Todd Boehly took over the club earlier this year. The former shot-stopper played an important role in securing the signatures of some biggest transfers in the past couple of years.

Speaking on David Seaman’s Seaman Says podcast (h/t Football. London), the 40-year-old praised Blues target and Three Lions number one Pickford.

“I have enjoyed watching Jordan Pickford so far in the tournament, because he came under criticism and obviously there was a big debate about who should start for England in the tournament. Him having the experience of the World Cup and where he played really well.”

“At the Euros he was brilliant. I think it was the right call to support and start him because in my opinion he hasn’t done anything wrong in those three tournaments.”

Pickford has been enjoying a decent tournament so far having started in all four games for his country. The 28-year-old ‘keeper has not been tested much so far and has kept three clean sheets in a row.

The Toffees number one has been linked with a move to west London recently. Edouard Mendy has fallen down the pecking order after some poor performances this season, with Kepa Arrizabalaga being the preferred option for Graham Potter.

While the Spaniard looks to be coming back to his best, there are still some doubts about whether he can be consistent throughout the season. Mendy looks to have fallen out of favour at the club and it will not be surprising to see him seek new pastures in January if the situation does not change.

Pickford, on the other hand, sees his current contract expire in 2024 and could be available for £30 million. Everton have been struggling in the league and they are likely to do everything they can to keep their number one at the Merseyside club.

The 28-year-old is likely to start against France in the quarter-finals later tonight. If the keeper can help the Three Lions to go till the end of the tournament, it will not be surprising to see the Blues knock on his door next month. They won’t be alone though, with rivals Manchester United also interested in the keeper.
